To build disciples who represents Jesus to everyone, everywhere with everything
Introduction
Discipleship In The Home
Parenting. We all have experience with it. Some are currently parenting, others will be in the future but all of us were parented at some point in our lives. Some of us loved the way we were parented but others would prefer to start out fresh. Either way, we can all agree that parenting is not an easy task. None of us would claim to be experts. We can all learn more about how to raise families that are connected and committed to Christ. Following from our values-driven discipleship campaign, we are going to spend the next four weeks looking at how the disciple-making values drive our discipleship in the home.
Our Last Obedience Steps
One of the key values in discipleship is actively hearing and obeying the Word. Therefore, it is important to have accountability to one another for our step of obedience from studying the Word. Spend the first part of your discussion asking – how did your step of obedience go from the last time we met?
Scripture
Read 1 John 4:9-19
Application
One of the most powerful things God did to influence our lives was by first showing us love through Jesus Christ, and in so doing establishing a connection with us. In the same way, the quality of our connection determines the influence in your relationships (especially as parents and children). Connection is one of our most powerful tools and there are things that we do in our relationships that are connection killers and connection keepers.
Discuss the following questions.
1. Connection Killers
- angry outbursts (Proverbs 30:33)
- disrespectful judgments (Proverbs 21:19)
- annoying behaviours (Proverbs 1:8)
- dishonesty (Proverbs 16:28)
Read the following passages. Can you observe any of these “connection killers” in your relationship with your children or your parents? How has that impacted your relationship? How did it make you feel about your relationship?
2. Connection Keepers – read Proverbs 24:3-4.
There are three things that we can do to keep the connection.
- lay the foundation
- listening
- learning for their love language (http://www.5lovelanguages.com/resource/the-five-love-languages-of-children/
What are some of the things that you can do to keep and build the connection with your children or parents?
Response
- Is there a truth that God wants you to obey?
- What will you do to obey this? I will…
