To build disciples who represents Jesus to everyone, everywhere with everything
Introduction
Discipleship In The Home
Parenting. We all have experience with it. Some are currently parenting, others will be in the future but all of us were parented at some point in our lives. Some of us loved the way we were parented but others would prefer to start out fresh. Either way, we can all agree that parenting is not an easy task. None of us would claim to be experts. We can all learn more about how to raise families that are connected and committed to Christ. Following from our values-driven discipleship campaign, we are going to spend the next four weeks looking at how the disciple-making values drive our discipleship in the home.
Scripture
Read Deuteronomy 6:6-9
Application
One of our disciple-making values is everyday moments. As parents we can open or close the door to disciple-making opportunities through everyday moments. As disciple makers in the home, we can create opportunities through everyday moments to give our children the freedom to believe in miracles, to face challenges, and to exercise faith in God.
Discuss one or more of the following questions.
1. Steven shared that there is a difference between raising well behaved children and raising Christ like children who love God and fulfils His mission. Describe in one sentence:
- For those who are parents – what is your goal in parenting your children?
- For those who aren’t parents – what was the goal of your parents in raising you up as children?
- What changes would you need to make for your parenting to become about spiritual discipleship?
2. What are you impressing on your children? What does it mean for you to impress the commandments of God to your children in everyday moments?
3. We all want what is best for our children. However there are times when what we call good planning, security and safety can close the door to their discipleship opportunities for our children to believe in miracles, to face challenges and to exercise faith in God.
- For those who are parents – reflect on your parenting. Share two stories:
- 1) how have you closed the door to disciple-making opportunities?
- 2) how have you opened the door to disciple-making opportunities?
- For those who aren’t parents – reflect on how you have been parented. Share two stories:
- 1) how have your parents closed the door to disciple-making opportunities?
- 2) how have your parents opened the door to disciple-making opportunities?
Response
- Is there a truth that God wants you to obey?
- What will you do to obey this? I will…
