Introduction

Discipleship In The Home

Parenting. We all have experience with it. Some are currently parenting, others will be in the future but all of us were parented at some point in our lives. Some of us loved the way we were parented but others would prefer to start out fresh. Either way, we can all agree that parenting is not an easy task. None of us would claim to be experts. We can all learn more about how to raise families that are connected and committed to Christ. Following from our values-driven discipleship campaign, we are going to spend the next four weeks looking at how the disciple-making values drive our discipleship in the home.

Scripture

Read Deuteronomy 6:1-9

Observation

  • What do these passages tell us about God?
  • What do these passages tell us about you and your life?
  • What did you like about this passage?
  • What did you not like about this passage?

Application

Often we instagram our home life to others. It’s important that we start with the understanding that there is no perfect home and perfect parents because that’s the environment when discipleship can happen. Try to be as transparent and honest as you can as you answer the following questions.

Discuss one or more of the following questions.

  1. Describe your home life and relationships with your parents or children.  What was important to them? How has that influenced you?
  2. In what ways, as parents, are you engaging intentionally in the discipleship of your children? Give examples.
  3. The Bible calls parents to first model a lifestyle of loving God because what you love drives how you live in the home. Reflect on where you spend your time, what you spend most of your time thinking and worrying about, and where you spend your money. What would you say is important in your life? What would it look like for you to model a lifestyle of loving God to your children/parents?
  4. This week ask your children or parents (if you don’t have children) – what do you think is important to me? What do I spend most of time talking about? Reflect on what they say and give feedback to your life group next week.

Response

  1. Is there a truth that God wants you to obey?
  2. What will you do to obey this? I will…
