Application

The Bible has a lot to say about money. More than 2350 verses address the issue of money giving us wise advice on financial stewardship.  This is good news as many of us struggle in this area. This series on financial discipleship will explore what the Bible says about money, wealth and possessions and then provide practical, sound strategies to manage and grow our finances so that we can live a God-honouring life in this area.  With the wisdom of the Bible and a few basic skills we can manage money effectively for ourselves, our family and to advance God’s kingdom.

Discuss one or more of the following questions:

  1. Alex Cook suggested a good budget ratio of 80/10/10: living on 80% disposable income, 10% minimum to God and 10% for long-term savings.  How does your budget compare to this 80/10/10 rule? What changes do you need to make to ensure that your budget is God honouring?
  2. God has given us everything that we have and He calls us to be good stewards of His resources.  Is your level of giving to God’s purpose appropriate?  Why/Why not?  What steps can you take to move towards this goal?
  3. Read Proverbs 21:7.  What is your attitude to debt?  Is there good or bad debt? Why?  If you have any outstanding debts what is your action plan to get your finances in order?
  4. Read Proverbs 22:3.  In what way can you plan for your financial future that you haven’t already done so? Do you need to get further help/advise?  If so, who can help?
  5. In the Spiritual Discipline of Simplicity there is a phrase ‘adding to your life by subtracting.’  Which areas of your life could you simplify so that it would decrease financial stress and/or allow more time for God and family?
  6. What have you in place financially in order to protect your family from any unforeseen adversity?  Share your wisdom with the rest of the group.
  7. How can you teach your children good financial stewardship?  Share your experience with the rest of the group.
